Vermilion RCMP Charge Three after Break and Enter

Vermilion, Alta – On Nov.14, 2021, at about 9:54 p.m., Vermilion RCMP received a 911 report of a break and enter in progress to a local business on 41 Street in Vermilion.  The complainant had discovered the criminal activity on security surveillance equipment and alerted police with descriptions of three suspect vehicles.

At about 10:10 p.m., police patrols located one suspect vehicle that was towing a utility trailer which matched one of the descriptions provided.  A traffic stop was conducted on Range Road 81 at Highway 16.  The investigation led to the arrest of the two occupants for possession of stolen property.  A subsequent search of the vehicle found a bear spray canister between the front seats, two balaclavas, approximately 10 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia amongst other items.

Officers attended a second location after the complainant advised he had found the second suspect vehicle near township Road 504 and Range Road 85.  Officers from Vermilion, Vegreville and St. Paul RCMP Police Dog Services, attended the area but after an extensive search they were unable to locate the suspects involved.

On Nov. 15, 2021, at approximately 9:56 a.m. Vermilion RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious person sleeping in the bush, on a rural property north of the town of Mannville, Alta., on Highway 881.  Police attended the location a located a man that had been identified as a suspect in the ongoing investigation from the night prior and he was arrested.

Tyler LaFlamme (36) and Ashley Benio (33), who were in the vehicle, have been charged with numerous offences including:

 

  • Breaking and entering a business (x2)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000.00 (x2)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (x2)

Benio is further charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Judicial release hearings were held.  Benio was ordered released and has an appearance scheduled for Dec. 20, 2021, in Vermilion. Laflamme is remanded pending a release hearing.  His next appearance is scheduled for Dec. 7, 2021.

Christian Sawyer (23) is charged with break and enter to a business and mischief over $5,000. Sawyer was released on an undertaking with a first appearance date of Jan. 17, 2022, in Vermilion.
