Smoky Lake RCMP Arrest Male Twice in one Day

Smoky, Alta. – On Sept.14, 2021, at 3:30 a.m. the Smoky Lake RCMP responded a break and enter in progress. An unknown male was attempting to break into a residence through a window, in the town of Smoky Lake.
The homeowner who was home at the time, reported that the male had allegedly broken a window in an attempt to gain entry.
RCMP responded and were able to locate the suspect who was identified as Dennis Watchmaker (46) from the Kehewin Cree Nation.
Watchmaker was arrested for break and enter. He was also found to have outstanding warrants.
Watchmaker was charged with:
- Break and enter to a dwelling
- Mischief under $5000
- Theft under $5000
- Disturbing the peace
- Trespass at night
A Judicial Interim Release hearing was held and Watchmaker was released on conditions to appear in court on a later date.
That same night on Sept. 14, 2021, at 9:30 p.m., Smoky Lake RCMP received a report of an unknown male who was breaking into a store on a rural property in Smoky Lake County.
While police were responding to the scene, the property owner reported that the male had approached the residence located on the same property and was now on the deck, allegedly breaking windows and doors in an attempt to gain entry. Two adults and three children were in the residence at the time of the incident. When the RCMP arrived on scene, the suspect fled on foot.
Police from neighboring RCMP detachments, including Redwater, Boyle, Two Hills and Eastern Alberta Police Dog Services responded and containment was set up.
The suspect gave himself up and was arrested with out incident. He was identified as Dennis Watchmaker, who had been released from police custody just hours earlier for similar offences.
The investigation also indicated that Watchmaker had allegedly started a small fire behind the store.
In relation to this incident, Watchmaker was charged with:
- Break and enter to a dwelling
- Break and enter to a business
- Arson – damage to property
- Mischief over $5000
Watchmaker was held for another Judicial Interim Release hearing where he was remanded into custody. He will next be appearing on Sept. 30, 2021 at Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Court.
