Ontario Premier Doug Ford declared the Easter Bunny an “essential service provider” on April 7.

Ford’s declaration was made under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. He stated, “I hereby confirm that the Easter Bunny is an essential service provider authorized to deliver Easter chocolate, candy and related treats to the children of Ontario,” Ford wrote in an official statement.

In the same spirit of the gesture, the Town of Vegreville has followed suit, issuing this declaration on April 9. “Mayor Tim MacPhee and Council at the Town of Vegreville have declared both the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy as essential workers in Vegreville.

This special exception granted by Council will allow the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy to continue their work in Vegreville! Even though they’re special, the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy must adhere to the same social distancing guidelines as everyone else while in Town – keeping 2 metres distance between themselves and others, washing their hands frequently, avoiding touching their faces, and staying home as much as possible when they are not working.”

On April 6 New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also put young people’s fears at bay, assuring them that the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are both “essential workers” during the outbreak.

“You will be pleased to know that we do consider both the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny to be essential workers,” Ardern said during a press conference on Monday, adding that it may be “difficult for the bunny to get everywhere,” given the current global circumstances.
